He was predeceased by : his parents, Shelton Edgar Cates and Merilene Decker Cates; and his brother Shelton Jones Cates. He is survived by : his wife Brenda Ward Cates; his children, Mandy Klaerner (Kevin), Melvin Cates (Stephanie), Jared Cates (Kylie), Ashley Romagus (Hooch) and Christopher Cates; his grandchildren, Tanner Cates, Braden Klaerner, Hannah Cates, Trey Romagus, Tyler Cates, Molly Romagus and Logan Klaerner; and his siblings, Larry Cates, Edna Insley (Bob) and Kay Simpson. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Monday, March 25th 2024 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Cornerstone Church - Cleveland (27453 Highway 105W, Cleveland, TX 77328). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 26th 2024 at 10:00 AM at the same location. A burial was held on Tuesday, March 26th 2024 at 11:30 AM at the Morgan Cemetery (1 Morgan Cemetery Rd, Cleveland, TX 77328).
