He was predeceased by : his parents, Lawrence A. Schmitt and Florence Menke Schmitt; his son Joseph; and his stepsons, James (Barbara) and Charles.
He is survived by : his children, John, Jeffrey (Elizabeth) and Judith Schmeling; his stepchildren, Bruce, Jeanmarie and Douglas (Sukyi); and his stepdaughter-in-law Michelle. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 18 great- grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Thursday, March 21st 2024 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, on Friday, March 22nd 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM and on Saturday, March 23rd 2024 at 9:00 AM. A funeral service was held on Thursday, March 21st 2024 at 6:00 PM at the Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory (2075 Washington Rd, Washington, IL 61571). A funeral Mass was held on Friday, March 22nd 2024 at 11:00 AM at the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church (904 E Lake Ave, Peoria Heights, IL 61616). A graveside service was held on Saturday, March 23rd 2024 at 10:00 AM at the Glendale Cemetery (600 Oakwood Ln, Washington, IL 61571).
Memorial donations may be made to the Catholic Relief Society or the American Cancer Society.
